However, while our vehicle has been prepared, we have been enjoying a great excursion to the north coast of Uruguay, transported and guided by our adopted local family, the veteran Patagonia explorers Florencia and Ricardo. Thanks to Florencia, the links below really tell the story, activities and experiences much better than I am able to narrate.

We travelled from Atlántida to Punta del Este in Ricardo’s pickup truck and from there to Punta del Diablo (where Ricardo and Florencia’s son Daniel has cabins which he rents out while working as a professional lifeguard in Punta del Este. We stayed 3 nights in Daniel’s cottage and got an excellent opportunity to enjoy Uruguayan cabin life (really quite similar to the Norwegian style), talking and enjoying good meals around a great open chimney at nighttime. From Punta del Diablo we visited Fortaleza de Santa Teresa which is situated in one of Uruguay’s National Parks and the black lagoon (La Laguna Negra). On the way, we also visited the Posada Allana to say hello to Felice a friend of Alexandra from New York and who works part of the year in the family-hotel in Uruguay and “the other half partly in Austria or travelling” as she explained it. The elegance and décor of the hotel is captured “as is” in Florencia’s video-clips.
During the entire trip, about 400 km roundtrip, it was very peaceful. We observed some locals preparing their mostly second houses along the coast for the summer season and we met only a few international visitors, some from Argentina and Brazil…. and as usually some German, French and Italians. Ricardo and Florencia, however, warned us that both the beaches and charming villages will be packed with tourists during most of December and January (which is equivalent to the European summer season). However, with the incredible length of the beaches, we can hardly imagine it ever will be packed.
Thank you, Ricardo, Florencia and Daniel for your great hospitality and warmth of heart.
Thank you also to the various doctors who Florencia consulted on my behalf – I hope that we will be able to offer a similar degree of support to travelers crossing our path.
