Now, close to Ushuaia, we again deviated from Route 3 and followed Route J to visit the “Estancia Harberton” located at the strait of Beagle. Here we learned the story of how an English Anglican missionary in the 1880s ended up settling (and with his family – now in fifth generation – adapting to and thriving in Patagonia. It was interesting to hear the story narrated by a settler family “occupying” a foreign country, and how they had learned to survive under rather harsh conditions. Their livelihood has over the years completely changed from sheep and cattle farming to now completely being dedicated to tourism (the Estancia is closed during the winter months). They now offer a museum, a garden with local plants, a café/restaurant/tearoom, and guided tours explaining their version of the history and their activities.

Returning towards Route 3 in the afternoon, we visited Puerto Almansa the town famous for centolla and located just in front of Puerto Williams. We ended up free camping close to Laguna Victoria.
The next morning, the 14th of December, we finally arrived in Ushuaia.
