Walking around town and seeing several expeditions to Antarctica being announced the idea occurred to participate on one. Checking our last-minute options, timing and budget naturally being important factors (we were nevertheless shocked to see the prices charged by some of the cruise-lines), we finally became aware of an offer for a cruise on the M/V Ushuaia. Reportedly, the vessel was originally built for the United States agency NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) for oceanographic research, but has recently been refurbished to accommodates 88 passengers in 46 cabins and suites.
And, after passing a small financial crisis requiring a touch of creative financial last-moment deal).
Thankfully, we have gotten a cabin mid-ship, reportedly the best location for crossing rough waters. According to locals, the two days passing of the Drake Passage, once in each direction, can be tough for land lubbers as us.
Never mind, we are now scheduled to leave the port of Ushuaia for a 11-day cruise of Antarctica on Tuesday 19th of December.
At least we are guaranteed a White Christmas this year.
The video below shows Mona fitting the cold-climate clothing (provided by the expedition company) in preparation for tomorrow’s departure.
We will revert once we are back in port.
